Double Melody Flutes by Stonewhistle

Highly unique double melodic flutes from Stonewhistle can be created for you in 6 different tunings and a multiple of natural finishes!  They feel wonderfully organic in the hand and immerse you in their sound coming from two sound holes on either side of the instrument while you are playing.   The same gorgeous and playable works of art we have come to expect from Stonewhistle, makers Hans and Ieke Houkes in the Nethelands, who also create some of the other amazing clay flutes we feature here at Beautiful Sounds (Innato, Natey, Zen and other special lines).  

These double melodic flutes can be explored in many ways:

• Stereo (same melody on each side at the same time)
• Drone (keep one note playing on one side, and play melody on other)
• Double Melodic (exploring both sides with melody) - Kerem's favorite way!

Though they might look complex, these flutes are made for almost anyone to pickup and play right away.   Mentorship sessions are available to share the basics of playing and exploring the sounds of these flutes - techniques which can be applied to any native American style and tuned flute (minor pentatonic).

BUILDING FLUTES

We love the sound of low fired clay

That’s why we accept the unique challenges this material brings with it during the manufacturing of our instruments. Clay shrinks during drying and firing and it asks for a never-ending focus on getting our instruments to sound clear and perfectly in tune after firing. We only know if a flute is fine after the very last process… A few years ago we decided to share all the knowledge we gained by giving workshops and creating projects around the world. Sharing the art of clay flute making with people of every age is a perfect way for us to share the healing aspect of sound with the world…

Natural Finishes

We have decided to use only pure clay to build our instruments. This is why we develop new ways to decorate our work only with Terra Sigillata. Terra Sigillata is made out of the finest clay particles which we distillate out of different river clays from different parts of the world. Every river clay produces different colors after firing. Through the years we were able to create a wide pallet of different colors, using only pure clay.

We use two different techniques on our instruments: a soap bubble technique with up to 6 different Terra Sigillata, a specially developed smoke fire technique to give our instruments a beautiful ancient look and a combination of both techniques. We also mix gold dust in white Terra Sigillata to get a special, mother of pearl effect when light shines on the surface of our instruments.
